Manufacturing overview

Rigid-flex boards integrate rigid sections with flexible interconnections. Fabrication requires a clear definition of each region and how the layer structure transitions between them.

Describe the rigid and flexible regions

Supply the stackup for each region, the rigid outline, flex outline and bend areas. Identify local reinforcement and any mechanical constraints affecting the finished assembly.

Review the integrated construction

Via locations, layer spans and materials should be evaluated across the whole structure. Include electrical requirements and the inspection records needed for the released build.

Map the rigid and flexible regions

A rigid-flex board combines rigid sections with flexible interconnections. Specify the layer construction separately by region: a single total layer number does not describe how each area is built. The transition between rigid and flexible areas, the installed geometry and local thicknesses must be reviewed together.

What to include in your quotation request

Provide the fabrication package and drawing at one revision. Distinguish fixed requirements from items open to engineering proposals. Include quantity and the required ship or arrival date; the material, construction and verification scope must be reviewed before the delivery plan is confirmed.

  • Fabrication artwork, drill data and mechanical outline.
  • Stackup, material grades and finished copper requirements.
  • Surface finish, critical tolerances and special features.
  • Required inspection, test conditions and documentation.
  • Quantity, project stage, destination and date requirement.

Questions, answered

Before your next build

What should I include in the quotation package?

Send fabrication and drill data, a drawing, stackup or construction details, quantity, material and finish requirements, and the required ship or arrival date.

Is rigid-flex the same as a flex circuit with a stiffener?

No. A stiffener reinforces a flex circuit locally; a rigid-flex construction integrates rigid and flexible circuit regions. Send the region-specific stackup for review.
