## What happens before PCB fabrication?
Pre-production engineering reviews the supplied design data and converts the agreed requirements into a manufacturing plan. PCBELEC’s engineering workflow covers Gerber and drill review, stackup and impedance requirements, surface finish and special processing instructions.
## Three stages of engineering preparation
A clear release process separates checking inputs from approving changes.
| Stage | Purpose | Customer input |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Check design inputs | Identify missing or conflicting files and specifications. | One revision of artwork, drills, drawing and requirements. |
| Assess manufacturing fit | Review features, tolerances and construction against the manufacturing route. | Responses to engineering questions and proposed changes. |
| Prepare production release | Create manufacturing data and agreed process instructions. | Approval of the final stackup, data and acceptance requirements. |
## Common issues to resolve
Keep manufacturing instructions explicit. Unresolved differences between the drawing and fabrication data can produce quotations based on different assumptions.
Layer naming or stackup information that does not match the artwork.
Drill data without clear plated and non-plated hole requirements.
Conflicting finished thickness, copper or surface-finish instructions.
Impedance targets without applicable layers and reference construction.
Mechanical slots, cutouts or panel requirements not shown clearly.
Different revision identifiers across files and drawings.
## DFM review does not validate the circuit
Manufacturability review addresses how the board can be fabricated to its specification. It does not replace schematic review, circuit simulation or end-product testing. Changes that affect electrical performance or product requirements need customer approval.
## Document the release decision
Consolidate answers to engineering questions into a controlled revision or an approved clarification record. Confirm the final file set and stackup before manufacture. If a requirement remains open, label it as open rather than supplying contradictory values.
Questions, answered
## Before your next build
Does DFM review guarantee that my circuit will work?
No. DFM addresses manufacturability against the supplied specification. Circuit simulation, electrical design validation and product testing remain separate responsibilities.
