## What Tg tells you
Glass transition temperature describes the temperature region where a laminate resin changes from a relatively rigid, glass-like state toward a softer state. Its dimensional and mechanical behavior changes through that transition. Tg is a material property; it is not a finished PCB’s guaranteed continuous operating temperature.
## When to review a high-Tg laminate
Consider lead-free assembly, multilayer construction and elevated-temperature applications when evaluating high-Tg material. The decision still depends on the selected resin system, stackup and thermal exposure. Avoid selecting a laminate solely because it has the highest advertised Tg.
## Standard FR-4 versus high-Tg FR-4
High-Tg FR-4 remains an epoxy-glass material option. The comparison should use actual grade data and project requirements rather than assuming every standard grade or every high-Tg grade behaves identically.
| Design question | Information to supply |
| --- | --- |
| Assembly exposure | The relevant thermal process and repeated assembly exposure. |
| Stackup stability | Layer arrangement, copper construction and finished thickness. |
| Operating environment | Temperature conditions and thermal cycling requirements. |
| Approval basis | Exact laminate grade, acceptance criteria and substitution rules. |
## How to specify the requirement
State the required grade when the design has already been qualified. If only a minimum Tg has been defined, retain the other thermal, electrical and mechanical criteria in the specification. Ask for the proposed laminate and construction to be confirmed before fabrication release.
## A useful quotation package
Include the stackup, fabrication drawing, copper specification, quantity and assembly constraints. Explain which material choices are fixed and which may be proposed. This helps distinguish a material change from a routine manufacturing adjustment.
Questions, answered
## Before your next build
Is Tg the maximum operating temperature of the PCB?
No. Tg describes a resin transition. It does not by itself establish the continuous operating temperature or reliability of the finished board.
